South O'Brien High School
Newspaper

South O'Brien High School offers the opportunity for students to become involved in writing newspaper articles for the school newspaper entitled "The Wolverine Roar." The newspaper is a one-page spread published in the local newspapers, The Paullina Times and The O'Brien County Bell.

Student editors brainstorm for story ideas and photo opportunities. Student reporters check the "assignment board" for ideas and/or submit their own. Article and photo assignments include features, news, and editorials concerning school issues and activities.

The editors create full-page layouts using a computer program called Adobe InDesign. When a page is completed for deadline, it is emailed to the local paper office in Paullina.

The students on the newspaper staff gain many skills. Newspaper staff members write for real audiences and get community feedback for their work. They learn the importance of meeting deadlines. In addition, they gain valuable experience utilizing digital photography and desktop publishing skills.
